Like many of you, I have been spending a lot of time in the exterior spaces of my home, and have specifically been working on elevating my outdoor entertaining game. Those who follow me on Instagram may have seen some images I posted of a family dinner we hosted on our patio this past weekend (just after a rainstorm passed through!).

This dinner party happened to be for a bunch of grown-ups. But contained within these pictures of my al fresco table is the secret to setting a kid-friendly table anywhere that’s actually stylish. Believe it or not, you can banish the ugly rainbow plasticware without handing little junior a big glass that’s likely to break.

Come closer and I’ll whisper in your ear…it all starts with these two little words:

Melamine and acrylic.

Melamine instead of porcelain, stoneware, or ceramic. Acrylic instead of glass or crystal.

There’s nothing or no one that says you can’t use outdoor dishes and ‘glassware’ for your everyday meals indoors. And you truly don’t have to dumb down your design or sacrifice style at all – there are so many gorgeous options on the market that look like the real deal, but are secretly shatterproof. This way the whole family can eat and drink from the same tableware, safely and cringe-free. (And maybe the kids can even help set the table without giving you a heart attack, as well!)

Last fall, we created a table for the annual Heading Home to Dinner fundraiser event, and our concept was ‘The Kids Table.’ The placesettings were so gorgeous, and believe it or not, were also all melamine and acrylic! We fooled a lot of people, and I was delighted to reveal to them what made it The Kids Table.

But what about those big, beautiful glass vases? Gotcha! They are made from cast resin. Can you even?

We even used outdoor fabrics for the custom table linens to make them as worry free as possible. Everything is machine washable and bleach-cleanable. Yes, please. 🙂

Beats the heck out of Paw Patrol plates and Thomas the Tank Engine cups, amiright?

(By the way, if the soup bowl and dinner plate look familiar, it’s because I liked them so much I bought the salad plate version of this design for myself…and you can see them in the first pictures!)

In addition to melamine and acrylic – and cast resin (those vases – still obsessed!) – you can confidently mix in other materials that are both ‘safe’ and beautiful. Did you notice the hammered brass pitchers above?

I’ve rounded up some of my favorite melamine and acrylic plates, bowls, glasses, and serveware. The image is clickable :). Feel free to use them indoors to make your everyday meals more lovely, bring them outside to dine in the open air, or both!

At the end of the week I’ll be back with another Friday Family-Friendly Find – and we’re going to stick with the indoor/outdoor dining theme. Hope to see you back here…until then, have a great rest of the week!
