For the second consecutive week, I’m posting my Friday Family-Friendly Find a day late. I actually have some blog schedule changes upcoming that will affect the next several weeks so read on for more about that!
This week I wanted to explore an area many people get nervous about – portable lighting. AKA lamps. If you take only one thing away from this blog post, let it be this:
Family-friendly does not have to be casual.
Family-friendly can be formal! Formal can be family-friendly!
I did a blog post about a million years ago on this very topic, featuring my own living room – if you want to read about more than just this super amazing lamp!

The Helena Lamp from Robert Abbey checks all of the #FFFFind boxes. It has elegant, classic style, great proportions, a high-end look, and a little secret…
The handsome lamp base is not made of fragile ceramic or super heavy stone, but resin!
What is resin, exactly? Essentially, it’s plastic. But it is a very sturdy and solid material that can be used to mimic a variety of other materials – including concrete, natural stone, plaster, metal, even glass! In the Helena Lamp, a faux limestone finish is applied to the classic urn-shaped resin base. I really love the masculine and moody combination of this base with the deep brown painted hardback shade. It is silver-lined, too! (And who can’t use a silver lining right now…amirite??).
And if you want a more light, traditional look, the Helena Lamp is also available with a white linen shade.
Please note that this is a pretty large lamp – not huge, but definitely on the bigger side at 30” tall. I see so many people make mistakes with the scale of lamps – usually, it is that they are way too small, but sometimes, the opposite happens. Make sure you look carefully at those dimensions before you buy any lamp!
If you liked this blog post, I’m so glad you did! This is the time where I usually give you the image to pin (and don’t worry, I still will!). I wanted to give you a heads up that, starting next week, Friday Family-Friendly Finds will be going on hiatus for a little while…
I have signed on to be a guest participant in this season of the One Room Challenge (my seventh!!), and will be posting on Tuesdays and Thursdays while that is ongoing. Tuesdays will continue to be the usual grab bag of design topics, and on Thursdays I will post my ORC progress. That’s all I can tell you right now – stay tuned to find out what my project is going to be. The only hint I’ll give you is that it’s a room in my own home I’ll be transforming – in just six(ish) weeks!
OK, now you are free to pin your little heart out!
